Director of Sustainability

The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) is a non-profit, coalition of steel producers turning pledges of emissions reduction into real results, and they want to work with you to help them achieve their goals. This is not your typical “green job.” The Director of Sustainability is a vital, behind-the-scenes force, keeping our operations organized, our members informed, and most critically, our mission moving forward with effective implementation of the Steel Climate Standard. The Director is a supportive, detail-oriented role, and it is perfect for someone who thrives on coordination, communication, engagement and bringing structure to meaningful work. You will be at the intersection of environmental responsibility and organizational effectiveness, helping us meet our sustainability goals and keep our systems running smoothly.

The Day-to-Day

The Director of Sustainability must be incredibly organized, a self-starter and a multi-tasker – comfortable working remotely but able to communicate, collaborate, work productively and hold oneself accountable to achieving tasks. And can you work in a team-setting? Because there may only be a few staff, but we have a wonderful community of consultants and member companies and organizations deeply committed to the mission to decarbonize the steel industry and achieve a net zero future. We hope you are, too. With their help, you will be charged with the following:

  • Collaborate with GSCC’s External Technical Consultant for Effective Implementation of the Steel Climate Standard
    • Support and guide GSCC members as they navigate the complexities of implementing the Standard and actively engage in the Standard’s continued and substantive evolution
    • Oversee the certification process
    • Manage the GSCC Technical Committee’s supervision of the Standard’s implementation
    • Lead the technical evaluation and stakeholder engagement process for the Standard’s upcoming five-year review.
  • Drive Committee Outcomes that Advance GSCC Leadership
    • Set, steer and implement technical objectives and strategic priorities leading to outcomes that move the GSCC and our members forward
    • Conduct productive and collaborative meetings and work closely with Committee members for project success.
  • Take Member Engagement to the Next Level
    • Partner with the GSCC Public Affairs team for creative internal communications that bring our members’ stories to life while also keeping them in tune to the work of the organization.
    • Organize networking and showcase events that elevate our mission publicly
    • Implement innovative outreach to grow the organization and retain existing members.
  • Get the Word Out
    • Support advocacy with informative policy briefs and blogs that inform and inspire
    • Coordinate with the Public Affairs team on social media and traditional media with GSCC activities.

Who You Are

In addition to the creative, passionate and organizational qualities noted above:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in environment, energy, manufacturing, steelmaking, life-cycle analysis or related fields is preferred.
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field, such as sustainability; environmental policy and systems; materials and applied sciences; chemical, mechanical, environmental or materials engineering; political and international affairs, etc.
  • Steel industry experience is a highlight.
  • Have a minimum 2-4 years of professional experience in a related field.

The GSCC is an Equal Opportunity Employer with no room for discrimination of any kind. The position is virtual and is preferred to be based in the Washington, DC, region. Unfortunately, work permits and visas cannot be sponsored at this time.
