Today, the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) announces the certification of Arkansas Steel Associates’ (ASA) Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) base year emissions and Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBET). With this milestone, ASA joins a growing coalition of steel producers demonstrating tangible, verifiable commitments to decarbonization.

“Arkansas Steel Associates is showing that ambition and accountability go hand in hand. Their certification reinforces the message that low-carbon steel is achievable today. Through independent verification and continuous progress, Arkansas Steel Associates is providing its customers, partners, and policymakers with the trust they need to advance their climate goals.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC

ASA submitted its SBET for GSCC certification following a thorough independent verification by KERAMIDA. Using a 2023 base year CASEI of 0.70 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel, the company has committed to an ambitious interim target of 0.60 by 2030, with a long-term goal of 0.12 by 2050 — fully aligned with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

“The Members of Arkansas Steel Associates, LLC (ASA) are pleased to announce our GSCC certified emissions targets. Achieving these targets will allow us to produce quality American-made steel while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. We plan to further address decarbonization issues by developing innovative ways to reduce our overall carbon impact. Our owners are committed to providing ASA with the tools and resources necessary to achieve our science-based emissions targets in line with the GSCC standard.” Hiro Kado, President & CEO, Arkansas Steel Associates, LLC

The GSCC Steel Climate Standard, adopted in 2023, provides a transparent, globally recognized framework for steelmakers to measure and report emissions and pursue third-party verified certification of corporate targets and facility-specific products. It ensures annual self-auditing and continuous progress toward emissions reductions aligned with the latest climate science.

ASA’s certification continues the momentum of GSCC’s growing network of trusted steelmakers. It helps customers make informed procurement decisions and supports public policy initiatives that recognize and reward verified, low-carbon steel production.
