GSCC Certifies First Low Emission Hot-Rolled Steel Products: from ASA and SDI
The GSCC has certified the first low-emission hot-rolled steel products from ASA and SDI, setting a new benchmark for climate-aligned steel under its rigorous Steel Climate Standard.
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) today announced the certification of eight specific hot-rolled steel products from two U.S.-based producers — Arkansas Steel Associates (ASA) and Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI). This milestone marks a significant expansion in GSCC’s certification program, moving beyond company-wide emissions targets to include product-level certification under the Steel Climate Standard.
ASA earned product-level certification for one of its core offerings, a steel railroad OTM. SDI received certification for hot-rolled steel products from each of the company’s seven steel mills. Each product was independently verified to meet the rigorous emissions intensity thresholds set by the Steel Climate Standard, giving buyers and end-users greater confidence in the environmental performance of the steel they choose.
“This is a proud milestone for GSCC and the global steel sector. By certifying products from ASA and SDI, we’re proving climate-aligned steel is not just aspirational — it’s achievable and already underway. These product-level certifications reflect our deep commitment to science-based, transparent standards that provide policymakers, buyers, and investors with credible tools to drive decarbonization. We commend ASA and SDI for leading the charge and setting a new benchmark for sustainable steelmaking.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC
The newly certified products were evaluated through a third-party verification process, ensuring they align with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard — a globally applicable, technology-neutral framework based on science-based targets and transparent reporting. The certifications provide credible data for customers seeking to procure low-emission steel and for policymakers advancing climate-conscious industrial strategies.
“We are deeply honored to receive this product-level certification from GSCC. This recognition underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainable steelmaking and our dedication to reducing emissions. We are proud to lead the industry in producing climate-aligned steel products that meet the rigorous standards set by the GSCC. This milestone reflects the hard work and innovation of our entire team. We look forward to continuing our efforts in driving the steel industry towards a more sustainable future.” Hiro Kado, President and CEO, Arkansas Steel Associates, LLC
“Steel is an integral component of the global economy and foundational to the world’s essential infrastructure. The GSCC product certification is recognition that lower-embodied carbon steel products necessary for the transition to a lower-carbon global economy are available now. Steel Dynamics is already a leader in producing lower-embodied carbon steel products, and the GSCC product certification recognizes this achievement.” Mark D. Millett, Chairman and CEO, Steel Dynamics, Inc.
With this announcement, GSCC continues to expand its global network of certified producers and products, laying the foundation for trust among customers, investors, and regulators committed to climate-aligned steel procurement. KERAMIDA, one of the GSCC verification bodies, performed a thorough, independent verification of ASA’s and SDI’s products.
