GSCC Certifies Italian Company Duferco’s Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emission Reduction Targets (SBET)
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has certified Duferco Travi e Profilati S.p.A.’s Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET), marking the continued expansion of GSCC’s certified community in Europe.
Today, the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) announces the certification of Duferco Travi e Profilati S.p.A.’s Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET). Duferco Travi e Profilati’s certification continues GSCC’s momentum in advancing measurable progress and stewardship in decarbonization across Europe.
“With the certification of Duferco Travi e Profilati, the Global Steel Climate Council’s certified membership in alignment with the Steel Climate Standard continues to grow. We continue to build momentum on top of the nearly 3 million tons of CO₂e already avoided through independently verified reductions, demonstrating what is possible when climate commitments are grounded in accountability and transparency. Producing steel from recycled ferrous scrap and operating its flagship San Zeno Naviglio facility on green energy, Duferco demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is built into the foundation of production. Congratulations to the team at Duferco on this major milestone on their decarbonization journey.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC
Duferco Travi e Profilati’s CASEI and SBET were third-party verified by RINA Services SpA. Duferco calculated a base value of 1.13 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel in 2022. The company set an interim target of 1.01 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2030 and committed to a long-term target of 0.12 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2050. These targets align with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard and demonstrate the company’s commitment to measurable and data-driven progress.
“We are proud to have obtained certification from the Global Steel Climate Council, which represents an important recognition of our concrete commitment to decarbonization. This achievement confirms the validity of our approach, based on the use of recycled raw materials, the efficiency of production processes, and the use of renewable energy. We have defined clear and measurable targets, aligned with the most rigorous international standards, because we believe that the transition to a low-emissions steel industry must be built on transparent and verifiable data. We will continue to invest in innovation and sustainable technologies to further reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.” Simone Campanella, General Manager, Duferco Travi e Profilati
Adopted in August 2023, the GSCC Steel Climate Standard is a global benchmark for measuring and reporting steel carbon emissions. It provides a science-based framework for members to obtain third-party certification of facility-specific emissions intensity, conduct annual self-audits to demonstrate ongoing decarbonization progress, and help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. The Steel Climate Standard supports the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
