GSCC Certifies Its First Mexican Member Company: Deacero Receives Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emission Reduction Targets (SBET) Certifications

The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has certified Deacero's Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET), marking the first certification of a member company headquartered in Mexico.

Deacero received certification of its Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and
Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET) from the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC). This achievement demonstrates Deacero’s commitment to credible, science-based, independently verified decarbonization targets aligned with global climate goals.

“The GSCC welcomes the certification by our first member from Mexico, Deacero, as they expand the Steel Climate Standard’s global reach and reinforce that outcomes-based accountability drives results across borders. With this certification, GSCC’s community continues to grow, building on a foundation where certified members have already eliminated nearly 3 million metric tons of CO₂e through independently verified reductions. Deacero’s commitment to achieving long-term targets by 2040, a decade ahead of the standard’s timeline, demonstrates how outcomes-based accountability can accelerate credible climate action across borders.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC

SCS Global Services independently verified Deacero’s CASEI and SBET. Deacero’s CASEI was certified at a 2020 base value of 0.79 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel. Under its new targets, the company commits to reducing emissions to 0.73 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2030 and 0.66 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2040. These targets align with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard and highlight Deacero’s long-term commitment to decarbonization and industry leadership.

“With this certification, we take another step in our Decarbonization Roadmap and affirm our responsibility – to all our stakeholders – to produce steel with the lowest emissions in North America.” Hernán Treviño, Director of Energy & Sustainability, DEACERO Group

Adopted in August 2023, the GSCC Steel Climate Standard is a global benchmark for measuring and reporting steel carbon emissions. It provides a science-based framework for members to obtain third-party certification of facility-specific emissions intensity and to conduct annual self-audits to demonstrate ongoing decarbonization progress and to help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. The Steel Climate Standard supports the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
