GSCC Publishes 2024 Annual Report
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has released its 2024 Annual Report, highlighting significant growth, the implementation of the Steel Climate Standard, and the certification of the first Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBETs). The report underscores GSCC’s leadership in advancing steel decarbonization and shaping global policy discussions.
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) published its 2024 Annual Report today, demonstrating strong growth and advocacy during the organization’s first-year ramp-up.
“GSCC’s 2024 Annual Report demonstrates the leadership of our members in advancing steel decarbonization and establishing net zero goals. Key achievements, such as certifying the first Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBETs) and growing membership across the steel value chain, underscore the adoption of the Steel Climate Standard. In 2025, we aim to expand our membership, influence critical policy discussions in the U.S. and internationally, and drive global adoption of sustainable, low-carbon steel practices.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC
Since its inception in 2023, the GSCC has become a leader in the drive toward steel industry decarbonization and the realization of a net zero future. The Steel Climate Standard published in August 2023, is now being fully implemented by GSCC members, with Steel Dynamics Inc (SDI) and Nucor Corporation (NUE) becoming the first companies to certify Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBETs) according to the Standard.
During 2024, the organization strengthened under the leadership of a new Executive Director and now includes 21 Steel Producer members representing 88 million metric tonnes, or 5% of global steel production. The membership includes 15 Associate Members and Supporters along the entire steel value chain.
A Supplemental Technical Document was released to support the effective implementation of the Standard, and five certification bodies were approved to work with steel producers on verifying SBETs and product emissions data.
The GSCC also established leadership in international forums deliberating standards, initiatives, and methodologies driving emissions reduction in the steel sector, including the Steel Standards Principles led by the Worldsteel Association and the World Trade Organization, focused on creating interoperability of multiple decarbonization programs.
In the coming year, the GSCC will continue to grow its membership, certify more SBETs and low-carbon steel products, and lead industry efforts to cut emissions in the steel industry.
