GSCC Sets The Benchmark With Record Certification of Low Emission Hot Rolled Steel Products from Nucor Corporation
GSCC has certified hot-rolled steel products from 12 Nucor mills, the most by any company, marking a record-setting milestone for climate-aligned steel under the Steel Climate Standard.
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) today announced the product certification of 12 steel mills from North American-based producer Nucor Corporation, the most from any company in the industry. This milestone marks the third member company to receive GSCC product level certification, bringing the total to thirty-nine certified GSCC products.
Hot-rolled products at the 12 certified mills received product-level certification. Certifications include mills from each product group: bar, beam, engineered bar, plate and sheet. Each product was independently verified to meet the rigorous emissions intensity thresholds set by the Steel Climate Standard, giving buyers and end-users greater confidence in the environmental performance of the steel they choose. Among these mills is Nucor Steel Sedalia, which marks the lowest emissions intensity of any GSCC certified product.
“Momentum is not only building, but it is accelerating. With a third company certifying products, we are demonstrating that climate-aligned steel is not just a vision—it is becoming reality. Every certified product demonstrates measurable progress, backed by credible data and transparent standards that empower policymakers, buyers, and investors to drive decarbonization. We commend Nucor Corporation for stepping up and certifying twelve mills, setting a powerful example of ambition and leadership in sustainable steelmaking.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC
The newly certified products were evaluated through a third-party verification process, ensuring they align with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard — a globally applicable, technology-neutral framework based on science-based targets aligned with the glidepath required to achieve the Paris Climate Agreement’s 1.5°C scenario goal by 2050. The certifications provide credible data for customers seeking to procure low-emission steel and policymakers advancing climate-conscious industrial strategies.
“As a founding member of the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC), Nucor has long led the industry with some of the lowest embodied carbon steel and steel products available. We were the first diversified steelmaker in the U.S. to set a net-zero by 2050 target—including Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions. By achieving GSCC product certification for 12 of our steel mills, more than any other steelmaker in the industry, we are continuing to provide our customers with transparent, independently verified data and the confidence that they are choosing American made steel with the lowest embodied carbon.” Leon Topalian, President and CEO of Nucor Corporation
With this announcement, GSCC continues to expand its global network of certified producers and products, laying the foundation for trust among customers, investors, and regulators committed to climate-aligned steel procurement. SCS Global Services, one of the GSCC verification bodies, performed a thorough, independent verification of Nucor Corporation’s products.
