GSCC Welcomes Vallourec as Newest Member; Certifies Science-Based Emission Reduction Targets Across a Global Production Footprint
GSCC has certified Vallourec's Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET), making it the first certified member operating both integrated steelmaking and electric arc furnace (EAF) production.
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) welcomed Vallourec as its newest member and announced the certification of the company’s Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET). As the first GSCC-certified member operating both integrated steelmaking and electric arc furnace (EAF) production, Vallourec demonstrates that the Steel Climate Standard applies across all production technologies—proving that meaningful decarbonization is achievable regardless of production method. Vallourec joins GSCC as part of the organization’s continued global expansion into new markets and production technologies.
“We are pleased to welcome Vallourec to the GSCC as our first certified member operating both integrated and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production, demonstrating that meaningful decarbonization is achievable across all technology pathways. Vallourec joins eight certified members, continuing to build momentum on the nearly 3 million metric tons of CO₂e already avoided through independently verified reduction. The company’s commitment to reach 1.20 metric tons by 2030 will expand our outcomes-based approach into new production methods and grow our industry’s collective impact.” Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC
CARES, a GSCC-approved certification body, independently verified Vallourec’s CASEI and SBET. Vallourec’s CASEI was certified with a 2021 base value of 1.70 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel, reflecting the company’s diverse production portfolio that includes integrated steelmaking alongside EAF operations. CARES also verified Vallourec’s decarbonization targets. Under this certification, Vallourec commits to reducing emissions to 1.20 metric tons of CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2030.
“The certification of our Science-Based Emissions Targets by the Global Steel Climate Council confirms the robustness of our decarbonization pathway and our commitment to align steel production with the Paris Agreement. By combining operational excellence, low-carbon steel making and circularity and innovation, we are turning this ambition into concrete actions across our sites and value chain, while continuing to deliver high-quality premium tubular solutions our customers need.” Philippe Guillemot, President of Vallourec
Adopted in August 2023, the GSCC Steel Climate Standard is a global benchmark for measuring and reporting steel carbon emissions. It provides a science-based framework for members to obtain third-party certification of facility-specific emissions intensity and to conduct annual self-audits to demonstrate ongoing decarbonization progress and to help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. The Steel Climate Standard supports the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
